Timeline

Made in the Middle 1999

Made in the Middle entered its fourth reincarnation in 1999, touring contemporary crafts from across the West Midlands. Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery supported the development of the exhibition this year as the launch venue.

The work exhibited in this exhibition was a snapshot not only of contemporary craft but life at the start of the new millennium. It incorporated present concerns and themes at the time, reflected changes in society and expressed our interest in the past as well as the present.

You can read more about the exhibition and the exhibitor's practice in the catalogue for this exhibition which is featured in the Resources section of this website: Catalogues

The 1999 exhibition was selected by Louise Taylor, Director of Exhibitions and Collection, The Crafts Council; Margot Coatts, writer and critic; Jackie Lee, Crafts Officer, West Midlands Arts; Mick Casson, potter and Charles Hadjamach, a British glass expert. It was curated by Anna Champeney.
